Skinner'El Dorado' Mourvedre 2017

Skinner 'El Dorado' Mourvedre 2017 - K. Laz Wine Collection
The 2017 Mourvedre boasts impressive varietal purity and complexity. The nose leads off with blasts of plum and rhubarb, riding on lush, nervy waves of clove, violets and tar. Juicy acidity on entry followed by a well-balanced harmony of red currant, raspberry and savory herbs in the mid-palate, and finishing refreshingly clean—a truly elegant offering with an eclectic family of flavors, undeniably Mourvedre. Skinner Vineyards is comprised of their estate vineyard, Stoney Creek Vineyard, which is in the newer Fair Play AVA and surrounding neighboring vineyards in the El Dorado AVA. Their elevations range from 1400-2740 feet. For the grapes, that means that they see temperatures about 2-5 degrees cooler than other Foothills regions, with moderating breezes that upslope from the delta as temperatures rise throughout the day. In the evenings, cool air drains down from the Sierra, creating a terroir that is unique to Skinner Vineyards. Mourvedre has many names around the world. In Spain it is called Monastrell, in Australia it goes by Mataro, and in France and America it goes by Mourvedre. This varietal is known for its earthy and savory qualities and is commonly used as a blending component in wines. More recently, winemakers are bottling it as its own variety to showcase its unique characteristics. Only 800 acres exist in California of which Skinner has about 3 acres planted on its two estate vineyards.
