Produttori del Barbaresco ‘Muncagota’ Barbaresco Red 2016
While once thought of as a secondary region, Barbaresco was revitalized in the mind 1900s, largely due to the efforts of Produttori del Barbaresco. While Produttori was originally founded in 1894 under the name Cantine Social, it was disbanded in the 1930s under fascist rule. In 1958, the priest of the Barbaresco village brought together 19 Nebbiolo producers to attempt the same theory—together, these growers were stronger than apart. None of the tiny growers were producing enough wine on their own or had the knowledge to gain traction in the market, but if they combined resources to make the best wine possible, their village could thrive. Thus began the most high-quality wine cooperative to this day.
The Muncagota site is laden with calcareous limestone, lending this wine an elegance and mineral freshness, which is a delightful tension with the powerful tannins of the Nebbiolo grape. The wine is classically aged for 3 years in large oak casks and an additional 8 months in bottle. 2016 is a vintage note to be missed. This is a dynamite centerpiece with charcuterie or wagyu.
Ceretto ‘Prapò’ Barolo Red 2016
Born from humble origins, Riccardo Ceretto began producing wines from purchased grapes in the 1930s. When his sons Bruno and Marcello joined the business, they began mapping the best vineyards in the region in the 1960s and making a plan to acquire their own land. Today, the estate is considered easily one of the best in the region, having won an award from World’s Best Vineyards in 2023. Situated in the Serralunga d’Alba on the Eastern side of the Barolo region, known for producing wines of great power and intensity, Prapò has an extended growing season, allowing the grapes plenty of time to gain complexity. The wine in glass is rich, deep, thoughtful and ultra-satisfying classic Barolo.
E. Pira Chiara Boschis ‘Via Nuova’ Barolo Red 2018
Chiara has been at the helm of this family estate since 1990. After 30+ harvests with her family’s winery, she has truly honed her craft. Produced from 6 different crus in Barolo, ‘Via Nuova’ exhibits the true art of the blend. While she honors the family tradition, Chiara does not eschew certain modern techniques—the wine sees 30% new French oak, adding subtle notes of vanilla and baking spice, in addition to classic notes of red cherry and rose. Chiara also has led the way in Cannubi by embracing the principles of organic farming. But her efforts didn't stop there. With unwavering determination, Chiara embarked on a mission to persuade fellow growers in the district to join the organic movement. Her tireless advocacy has yielded remarkable results, transforming the entire region into a thriving hub of organic viticulture.
