Pas de Cheval ‘Prelude’ Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
2019 marks the debut vintage for Vanessa Conlin and winemaker, Maayan Koschitzky’s new project together, Pas de Cheval. Vanessa has been a longtime friend and colleague in the wine business as well as Maayan, who is currently the head of winemaking for Atelier Melka, which consists of all of Philippe Melka’s winery clients. We just tasted this 2019 Oakville Cabernet, and it was outstanding, along with their St. Helena and Howell Mountain Cabernets. 100% Cabernet, this 2019 comes from the eastern side of Oakville and showcases immediate aromas of dark fruit which then leads onto the palate with complex notes of blackberry, cassis, graphite, and cedar box. It was aged for 20 months in 100% French oak, 70% new French oak. The tannins are velvety and help to provide a long-lasting finish. This wine will only show better with an hour decant. 125 cases were produced.

Pas de Cheval ‘Intermezzo’ St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Called ‘Intermezzo’ because co-vintners Vanessa Conlin and winemaker, Maayan Koschitzky consider this to be a bit fuller-bodied than the ‘Prelude’, it comes from the west side of St. Helena off Inglewood Avenue. At this grower vineyard site, the well-drained alluvial soils help to provide complexity in the glass. Upon opening, notes of ‘blackberries, crème de cassis, crushed stones, cedar shavings, cocoa. The palate is mouth-filling and rich, loaded with vibrant red berry fruit and ripe, perfectly integrated tannins.’ While full-bodied and layered with all these flavors, it still maintains elegance. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone 4 is the sole variety for this debut vintage. Maayan aged the wine for 20 months in 100% French oak, 75% new French oak. 200 cases were produced.

Pas de Cheval ‘Finale’ Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Considered to be the fullest-bodied of the three debut offerings of Pas de Cheval, this 2019 comes from Howell Mountain and while it is big and bold, it offers lush flavors of blackberry and cocoa dusting, with ‘tilled earth, toast, vanilla, five-spice, and crushed violets. It finishes with evolving patterns of ripe fruit, spice and seems endless. It is a gorgeous expression of Howell Mountain masculinity and richness, but still defined by an overall sophistication and balance.’ This too is an expression of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and is comprised solely of Clone 168. It showcases the best of the rocky soils that are high on Howell Mountain. For this offering, winemaker, Maayan Koschitzky, aged the wine for 20 months in 100% French oak, 70% new French oak. 125 cases were produced.
