Harlan Estate 'Maiden' Red 2017 - K. Laz Wine Collection

It was just announced that Bill Harlan has given the reigns as director of Harlan and BOND to his son, Will. It will be interesting to see how the winery grows and evolves under his realm. Founded in 1984, Harlan Estate is a winegrowing estate in the western hills of Oakville, California – in the heart of the Napa Valley. Consisting of 240 acres of natural splendor set above the fabled Oakville benchlands, the property rises in elevation from 225 to 1225 feet above sea level. Forty acres are under vine, planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The Maiden represents the second selection from Harlan Estate. It is a highly detailed and sumptuous wine, remarkably faithful to the vineyard's pedigree. Accordingly, the resemblance to her "big sister" is unmistakable. The first commercial vintage of Maiden was 1995 and was released in 1999. For the quality and respective price point, we find this wine to be a great second wine for a First Growth-style property like Harlan. "Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 The Maiden opens with beautiful red currant jelly, warm plums and blackberry pie notes plus hints of rose oil, Chinese five spice and fragrant earth. The palate is medium-bodied, elegantly styled, refreshing and plush, offering bags of perfumed black fruits, finishing long and fragrant.”
