Domaine Vincent Ledy ‘Les Beaumonts’ Chorey-lès-Beaune Pinot Noir 2017
While many Burgundy producers work with very small vineyard plots, Vincent Ledy takes this to an extreme with just 3.5 hectares (just under 9 acres) comprising his estate. Unlike many vignerons in the region, Vincent did not acquire his properties by inheritance, but rather because of passion and hard work. He trained in the region for years prior to forming his own estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 2007. Now, all of Vincent’s land is tended completely organically. Despite being a relatively newer producer in the area, Vincent embraces the pursuit of classic Burgundy character, eschewing new oak, using only native yeast and absolute minimal sulfur. This Chorey-lès-Beaune with 7 years of age blew us away—distinct terroir without being excessively earthy or funky, bright cherry fruit, and herb notes—everything we want in Burgundy, and at this price, we can pull the cork on a Wednesday guilt-free.
Domaine du Chancelier ‘La Rave Nord’ Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Vieilles Vignes Pinot Noir 2021
If you have visited the town of Beaune in Burgundy, it is quite possible that you have walked by the cellars of Domaine du Chancelier and not even realized. Elsa and Cédric Ehrhart selected this 18th century building to be surrounded by the history upon which the region was built. Beating Vincent Ledy in size by a hair, the couple has 5 hectares (12.35 acres) under vine. In addition to being completely organic, Elsa and Cédric further their commitment to the environment by operating a gravity-fed winery. The attention to detail in these wines is precise from vine to bottle—the grapes are hand-picked and very slowly fermented under cool temperature in a combination of stainless steel and barrel. If you are a seasoned Burgundy drinker, you will love ‘La Rave Nord’ for its elegance and floral aromas. If you’re making your initial foray into the category, this is a great introduction to the region for anyone who is typically more comfortable with Sonoma
Joseph Colin ‘Les Hauts de la Combe” Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2021
As a relative of two famed Burgundy producers (his father Marc Colin and his brother Pierre-Yves Colin), Joseph has access to some of the best parcels in the region, many with older vines. Those for this Bourgogne bottling average 50 years old. Joseph’s approach is focused on producing the best fruit possible and intervening minimally in the cellar. All wines are fermented with only indigenous yeast and aged in large oak barrels. I was delighted to pay a visit to Joseph Colin during this recent trip and was deeply impressed with the consistency and quality of these wines. When you meet Joseph, his shy nature is not surprising. He is focused, much like his wines. When he is working with fruit this close to perfection, I can understand his hands off approach. There is a precision that allows for verve in these wines. The minerality that shines through as a result is entirely satisfying. Elegance, rather than opulence, defines these bottles.
Xavier Monnot ‘Les Duresses’ Monthelie Blanc Chardonnay 2020
In 2005, Xavier took over what was previously known as Domaine René Monnier from his grandfather. The estate located in the heart of Meursault is fortunate to claim 17 hectares (42 acres) under vine, with exceptional parcels throughout the Côte de Beaune. Xavier maintains average vine age at 30-40 years, giving these wines consistently fantastic complexity. He uses minimal intervention in the vineyards and only natural yeast in the vineyards. This Monthelie Blanc is beautifully rich, while still allowing for mineral presence. It boasts the character of a truly classic white Burgundy.
