Abreu 'Madrona Ranch' Red 2021- Special Priced 3-Pack - K. Laz Wine Collection
Madrona Ranch, tucked at the base of Spring Mountain was the first estate vineyard established by Abreu, planted in 1980. The vast array of elevations and exposures in the vineyard make for a unique and complex wine year after year. This bottling underwent the same co-fermentation as all the winery’s blends. David Abreu and winemaker Brad Grimes have always understood wine as part of a gastronomic experience, and as such, winemaking is approached similarly to cooking. David likens fermenting different varieties together to braising all vegetables together to build complex flavors in a coq au vin. After fermentation, the wine undergoes aging for 2 years in new French Oak. Intense color, concentration and energy characterize this exceptional vintage whose final blend is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Merlot.

There’s a heart to Napa Valley that beats like nowhere else—a rhythm defined by warm, sun-drenched days beside ponds and vineyards, and cool, moonlit evenings gathered around picnic tables where worn jeans and old t-shirts meet food grown just down the road and world-class wine. At the center of it all is community—friends and colleagues who’ve shared harvest challenges, triumphs, and countless celebrations.

It’s rare, however, to find that same deep sense of community within a single professional team. In an industry where winemakers often move from one project to another, Abreu Vineyards stands apart. Few wineries in Napa Valley carry such a cohesive legacy, with much of the team—including winemaker Brad Grimes—having been part of the project for over two decades. Together, they embody the spirit and history of Napa Valley, crafting a legacy that lives in every bottle.

David Abreu, a Yountville native, learned to farm at a young age while working the vineyards of Caymus during its heyday. After returning from the Vietnam War, he launched a viticulture consulting business, purchased Madrona Ranch, and later founded Abreu Vineyards in the late 1980s. Following two vintages on his own, David realized he couldn’t devote himself fully to both vineyard and winery work and began assembling the core team that still defines Abreu today.

Brad Grimes, once a chef, started by working long hours in the vineyards before moving to the winery, gaining a complete understanding of wine from soil to bottle. Over his 26-year tenure, his wines have earned numerous 100-point scores and critical acclaim—though Brad remains focused on the fruit, not the press.

Matteo Abreu, David’s son, grew up among the vines and now leads vineyard management alongside a dedicated team, many of whom have been with the winery for more than two decades. Longtime team members like Ernesto Maldonado, Head Company Foreman since 1982, and Enrique Villaseñor, Foreman for Madrona and Cappella since 1993, exemplify the continuity and craft that make Abreu Vineyards unlike any other in Napa Valley.
